Right Into The Cold

So I was asked by my teacher to make a new intro for our morning news channel and we’re the Wild Cats, so me being the WoW junkie that I am,  made it look like the cats from World of Warcraft.
Also this was supposed to be a lion cat but I remembered that there are no lions in Canada (In the wild that I know of at least) so w/e, looks more original like this.

This took like 7-9 hours in illustrator because I cannot decide on colours.

  1. The things in my project that worked really well

Well, I enjoy all the different colour variations that I made and I think that all the colours within the cats all work together pretty well. The fact that all the eyes are glowing works well for this model of cat due to the more feral look to it but the glow is not over the top. I really do enjoy the way that this cat looks both like a lion, tiger and a saber tooth cat.

  1. At least 2 things to add or improve on next time

I would like to improve the shaggy feel that these cats have along with the angry eyes that they have. I did not intend for them to look so angry but I guess these are wildcats after all. The reason why I would want to change their aggressive look is because there are children going to this school and the last thing that they need to be shown every day in the morning is an angry cat ready to bite something. – Not my best planing or work there. Another thing that I would change is the way that these cats are facing. I want to make them have a forward facing look along with a ‘Over the shoulder’ look. More assets with more angles will result in much more freedom to animate something cool.

  1. At least 1 thing you did not do well

All of these are just re-colours and I know that I should have changed the designs on some of them to have spots or full- on stripes, make one a lion, make one a tiger, make one a leopard, ect. Also, none of these cats look anything like the wild cats that we have here in Canada save for the cream-coloured one and the cloud-coloured one. Another thing that I did not do well is that, again, these are just copy – pasted versions of the same cat with no changes to it save for the colour. I should have shagged the fur style, made one or two smaller, gave one bigger ears, smaller paws, that sort of thing.

  1. What was difficult? What was easy? (referencing tools, techniques, styles, etc)

An easy thing was that I know what I wanted to have on these cats and how they looked, so that wasn’t too much of a challenge for myself. Another thing that I found easy was that you don’t need to put in that much effort to make the fur look more feral and rugged than I had originally thought.. Except, I think I made these cats look to feral.
A difficult thing? Well, notice how none of these are orange or yellow even though they’re tigers? Well, I’m colour bling in the orange/yellow spectrum and so I attempted to make an orange cat but I have no idea if it actually is orange or not. I just find it hard to experiment with golds, reds and those warm colours because I cannot see half of them.

  1. What was the most fun vs most frustrating.

Fun? Making the cat become a cat. The rough draft of this was indistinguishable and I’m super glad that the final product somewhat resembles a cat. I had fun making the fur, the glow eyes, the stripes, everything.
One thing that I found frustrating? Well, when I was showing these to someone, they asked why I hadn’t made a tiger, but I did make one but since I am colour blind in the yellow and orange spectrum, I’m assuming that the tiger that I made doesn’t look like a tiger. It sure is great to be alive, realizing that you can’t see 2 colours.

  1. If I were to do redo this project from scratch I would…

Do a profile view, do a froward view, do a different pose, just make it different. I would also attempt to make a different breed of cat instead of this lion-tiger hybrid I have going on here. I’d defiantly enjoy doing a different animal as well because birds and deer are also loved and appreciated by my dear self.
