This piece is made entirely out of 3’3 mm squares. This has taken me quite a while to put together and I am almost done. due to the mountains, sky and ground not having as much detail as the antelope or tree, it should not take as long.
This piece has been very challenging for me because I am not used to making pixel art at all and I am not used to the amount of time it has taken thus far.
My plans for this piece is to animate the antelope so that it is moving and the mountains slowly pan to the right.
So far, this piece has taken me over 35 hours to produce.
-Edit, at the 40 hour mark now.
- The things in my project that worked really well
You see those trees? I love them so much and I am super proud of how they came out. I also love the antelope as well because that took a while to make and it also came out looking super. Mainly, I like all the colours from the dark red and brown of the trees to the sweet pink and grey of the leaves.
- Atleast 2 things to add or improve on next time
I’d definitely add less to this image than there already is because just that antelope alone took so long to create. Putting in even a simple background is next to impossible if it’s a high quality background and I would just like to keep this project as simple as possible.
Another thing that I would add would be more trees. Or just strait up make trees the theme instead of an animal. I loved the colours and uniqueness of the two trees along with the bushes that I made, so maybe make some flowers to turn the scenery into a meadow. That would look way better than this.
- Atleast 1 thing you did not do well
The one thing that I did not do well on was the fact that I didn’t finish this project. This is very rare for myself because I don’t like to keep a project unfinished.
- What was difficult? What was easy? (referencing tools, techniques, styles, etc)
An easy thing for this project is that everything here is just a bunch of 1mm*1mm squares. Those are pretty easy to make and the fact that I had a reference was pretty cool as well.
The hard part about this project was the fact that I didn’t realize how long this would take. I wanted to finish it but I knew deep down at some point that I had to scrap it and move onto more important works. I didn’t want to let go of this one but I had to.
- What was the most fun vs most frustrating.
The fun part for me was placing all the pixels into place, very therapeutic in my opinion. Also the fun part was the fact that I attempted this project before realizing that I didn’t have enough time to finish it.
Something that I found frustrating was the fact that this project too so long. Way too long in fact. This project was probably the longest thing I’ve ever made within Adobe Illustrator.
- If I were to do redo this project from scratch I would…
Make the pixels bigger. I mean, this project was fun but my goodness, those pixels are so touchy to place. I’d also not do a landscape with pixel art because that was painful.
