One of my projects for this semester is to re-create a background and level for the game ‘Monument Valley.’ I have used the colours of gold, black and purple to revitalize the aesthetic of the game.
Whilst working on this project, I had come across several challenges that made me struggle a bit. One challenge was time, sure it’s the half-way point in the year, but those days sure do tick by fast and this piece is time demanding. Another challenge that I have face was me trying to perfect the piece before it is even finished – it isn’t even finished yet as I still have to create small characters for the level – which certainly has set me back a bit.
My goal for this project is to have everything be finished and have a slight animation to it so that it looks like a GIF of the actual game.
This project thus far has taken me approximately 30 hours.
- The things in my project that worked really well
I believe that the colours for this project fit really well with each other because I used a sunset colour pallet. I really like the 3-d shaped that I put into this piece along with the ethereal witch characters as well. I also like how the sun is the contrast for this particular piece and the clouds blend in with the background.
- Atleast 2 things to add or improve on next time
I’d improve the size of both monuments, make them bigger. I would also make the characters bigger as well because you cannot really see all the detail on the characters that I have created. I’d also change the amount of things that I have in the background because they really take away from all the style and detail that I have put into this piece of work.
- Atleast 1 thing you did not do well
The one thing that I did not do well was time. This took 6 weeks. 6 WEEKS! That’s a very long time in my opinion and I would like to have taken less time on this project as a whole.
- What was difficult? What was easy? (referencing tools, techniques, styles, etc)
Something easy that I found was using a colour pallet for the background and for my assets. Since I’m not the best when it comes to colour because I cannot perceive yellow or orange, this really helped me choose the colour for the sun. For me it looks white but I’m sure that it’s that sweet sweet sun colour.
One thing that I found frustrating is my ability to just stall on this project. What a phenomena that was, which is bad and probably why it took 6 weeks to finish.
- What was the most fun vs most frustrating.
I enjoyed designing this project because last year when I was tackling 3-d objects, I really enjoyed it and thought that I would do it again. I also found the whole process of this entire project fun.
Something that I found frustrating was the fact that no matter what I added, there really wasn’t anything new because they would all be placed upon the 3-d assets that I had created, thus making them tiny. I didn’t want to make the platforms larger because that would block the sun.
- If I were to do redo this project from scratch I would…
Make! The! Platforms! Bigger! Make everything bigger, because right now, everything is too small to see properly. Did you know that there’s a design within the door on the bottom 3-d shape? Probably not because you cannot see it properly.
